Minimum Wage for Worker in Textile, Garment and Footwear Industry for Year 2017

The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training (“MLVT”) has issued a Prakas determining the minimum wage for workers in the textile, garment and footwear industry for the year 2017.  This Prakas was published on September 29th 2016 - “Prakas No. 414/16”.  This Prakas was finalized subsequent to the meeting of The Labour Advisory Committee of Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training at the 8th mandate. This Prakas will become enforceable from January 1st, 2017.  The range of its enforceability shall extend to the following industries: textile, garment and footwear .

Accordingly, this Prakas stipulates that the minimum wage shall increase by adding US$5 (Five US Dollars) on top of the current US$148 (One Hundred and Forty-Eight US Dollars).  Thus, the official minimum wage for  these workers shall become US$153 (One Hundred and Fifty-Three US Dollars) per month.  This official minimum wage shall apply to regular workers only.  Probationary workers shall only receive US$148 (One Hundred and Forty-Eight US Dollars) per month.  After the probationry period has ended, the probationary workers shall receive the wage of US$158 (One Hundred and Fifty-Three US Dollars) per month..

For the workers who receive wages based on the quantity of the products produced, they shall be paid accordingly. In the case in which the produced work exceeds the minimum wage, the workers shall receive the exceeded wage as calculated.   In the case where the quantity of the work produced totals less than the minimum wage, the probationary worker shall receive the minimum wage of US$148 per month and regular worker shall receive the minimum wage of  US$153 per month.  Furthermore, previously received worker benefits shall remain the same.

NOTE: The minimum wage for the aforementioned industries is revised yearly as agreed by these three entities- employers’ representatives, employees’ representatives and government representatives.
